George Cooke on the Isaak's 2009 season...

"To be sure the winter of 2007-2008 was in the top 3 nasty winters of the last 24 years. It took top honors for duration as I personally watched 3" of snow fall on April 20th. The long and short of this was our second winter kill in 23 years (the other being a lower lake 30-40% kill in 96'-1997). By late April '08 we had determined the extent of winter loss...85% + in both lakes. Quick response in terms of plants put us back in the game by fall with superb fishing thru Halloween with 16"- 28" Rainbows, Browns and some gorgeous Tiger Trout (The 25"-28" Rainbows were clearly part of the 15% survival group).

Looking towards the 2009 season...history has shown us (Find me some WOOD to knock on!!!) that these winters don't do the same thing 2 years in a row and a late spring of the magnitude of 2008 is super duper UNLIKELY we are looking forward towards a normal eastern Washington spring. what might that be you say?: Basin lakes fishing well the last week of Feb ,1st 2 weeks of March and the Douglas Co. plateau lakes (Isaak) good to go the last days of March and rolling real good by April 3-5 which is a historical perspective. We will be looking at fish in the 17-24" range (85% of pop.) with 15% running 25-31".
Our fall groups raved of the fishing they saw including 2 -23 year repeat clients (Gary Bowden and Bob Mosqueda).

No doubt 2008 Spring anyway was one to forget the CYCLE is in the right direction for 2009 onward...get your stick and don't forget some 2x "you'll need it."

Isaak's Ranch
 Fly Fishing Trips

Isaak's Ranch

Isaak's Ranch is the premier private lake in Washington State  and is famous for producing big hard fighting Rainbows.  It has been operating since 1987 and is the longest running  pay-to-play lake in Washington State and has been regarded as one of the finest stillwater destinations in the Northwest for many years.  Isaak's is composed of 2 lakes, the lower lake is 60 acres and has slightly larger fish that range from 17"-26" with a few fish that might push the 30" mark!  Isaak's has produced fish to 32" in years past and they are not brood stock, but fast running and super hard fighting.  The upper lake is about 40 acres and hosts fish in the 14"-24" range.  Both lakes are very fishable on foot and provide and excellent opportunity for picking off cruising fish.   For anglers with personal watercraft, it is a boundless resource where anglers can explore without risk of having to fish the same water twice.

Both lakes have awesome hatches of Calibaetis, Damsel Flies, Dragon Flies, Leeches, Chironomids, and even Scuds which help it produce such fast growing, feisty, and obese trout.  It is similar to many other Eastern Washington lake ecosystems like Lake Lenice, Dry Falls, Quail Lake, and Beta Lake in composition, but the massive aquatic fertility of Isaak's Ranch is rivaled by none and puts it into a league of its own.  It grows amazingly stout and powerful trout that will test your nerves, tippet, and even your stout 5 weight rod!

The lakes are about 2 hours northeast of Ellensburg.  We will meet anglers in Ellensburg on the morning of the trip, and head towards the lakes.  We stop again in Dry Falls and meet anybody else that is coming along that may have lodged in Ephrata or Soap Lake.  The guide will let you know where and when to meet a few days before the trip.  We will also provide you with a gear list and suggested fly patterns, our shop carries any necessary gear and we would love to supply you with anything that you may need to purchase.

A Washington Freshwater Fishing License is required for this trip.
